What is Wifi?

Wifi, short for wireless fidelity, is a technology used to enable devices to connect and communicate with each other. The Wifi technology utilizes radio based technologies called IEEE 802.11 standards (see below). An advantage of the wifi technology is its ease of use, especially its ability to connect computers, laptops and PDA's to each other, to the Internet, and to wired and wireless networks.

IEEE 802.11 Standards
Name Transfer Rate Compatible
802.11 (LAN) 2Mbps None
802.11a (Wifi) 54Mbps None
802.11b (Wifi) 11Mbps 802.11g
802.11g (Wifi) 54Mps 802.11b
