What is a Firewall?
A firewall is a device, either hardware or software, that monitors and controls the outgoing and incoming traffic. Most new motherboards already come with a built in hardware firewall. There are two types of firewall; Network layer firewalls and Application layer firewalls. Network layer firewalls operate at a low level of the TCP/IP protocol, they are mainly used by hosting companies, while Application layer firewall operate at a higher level and are generally used by customers. Due to the various network protocols and security issues it is it often recommended to have a qualified network administrator when installing a firewall.
